. . .
After we emerged from the bathroom, Zane went downstairs. I went into Devon's bedroom and closed the door. Needing a few minutes to myself, I lay down on his bed. I curled into a little ball and wrapped my arms tightly around his pillow. I napped for a while, and somewhat peacefully at that. Which made me feel guilty.
When I came downstairs again, everyone was in the living room. The laptop was set up on the coffee table once more, but just as before, the feed was dark. Tore was on the sofa, totally conked out with his head leaning back. Portia was asleep with her head on his leg. His arm draped over her and she clutched it tightly. They looked so comfortable together.
I shuffled my way into the kitchen. The Gatorade in the icebox was calling my name. Zane came in as I closed the refrigerator door.
"I need to step out front to have a smoke. Do you mind?"
I took a sip of my drink before answering. "Since when do you smoke?"
"Don't usually. It's an old habit I fall back on occasionally. But I won't if it bothers you."
"No, no. It doesn't bother me. Do whatever you need to do."
He pulled a yellow pack of American Spirits from his shirt pocket and stuck a single cigarette in his mouth before leaving the kitchen. I walked back into the living room to find Portia and Tore beginning to stir. They hadn't heard or seen me come into the room, so I paused for a moment.
She sat up and stretched her arms over her head. He craned his neck back and forth, trying to get it to pop, then reached out to smooth her hair down. His hand paused at her cheek. It was such an intimate gesture that I was stunned by it, and further shocked when she didn't try to push him away. I may have been slow on the uptake, but something told me that there was more to their bickering than just sexual tension.
I hated to interrupt whatever was going on between them, but wanted to keep an eye on the laptop. I coughed in an obvious way to alert them of my presence. Neither of them startled or tried to move away from each other as I entered the room. I took a seat in the chair Zane had previously occupied. Tore yawned, followed by Portia, then me.
I looked at the screen in anticipation. I had no idea how much longer we could expect to wait. Worried that there could be many more hours of blackout, I leaned back in the chair. Just as I got comfy, a thunderous crash rattled the front door. We all startled. Tore jumped up and held a hand out for us to stay put as he grabbed the iron poker from beside the fireplace.
"Zane is outside," I whispered. He nodded, continuing his slow but steady movement toward the door.
When he was almost there, it flew open and a body came crashing through, landing hard on the floor.
